Shaded walks under a canopy of elms set this stereograph of Boston Common apart from the city's busier streets. The Common, set aside as common land in 1634, is generally regarded as the oldest public park in the United States, and its elms were a well-known feature of the grounds for generations. The card was published by the H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, a firm that issued stereoscopic views for home viewers. Each card held two nearly identical photographs that merged into a single image with depth when seen through a stereoscope, and this one records everyday city life in a Boston park around 1906.
