The Public Garden and Boston Common, seen from Arlington Street, show the city's green heart at a moment when Boston was still growing into its role as a major American city. Boston Common, established in 1634, is among the oldest public parks in the United States, and the Public Garden beside it was laid out in the 1860s as a more ornamental space, with formal beds, a lagoon, and winding paths. Arlington Street, which runs along the edge of the Garden, was lined with fine townhouses, so the view looks out from the residential world onto the open ground that drew families, strollers, and grazing cows to the city's center. Early views like this one record how Boston balanced commerce and leisure in its oldest neighborhoods.
