The Boston Public Garden, dated here to 1904, was laid out in the 1830s as the first public botanical garden in the United States, and by the turn of the century its winding paths, ornamental beds and footbridge over the lagoon had made it one of the city's favorite places to stroll. Pictures from this period often show the garden as a carefully managed landscape meant for leisure, with visitors in formal dress and the trees and water features arranged to suggest a quiet retreat within the bustling city. Look closely at how the grounds are framed, since the balance of open lawn and shaded walks was central to how Bostonians of the era understood their public parks.
