The Swan Boats are what set this view apart from other scenes of Boston's Public Garden, a pond-side attraction that has carried passengers across the lagoon for well over a century. The boats are pedal-powered craft shaped like swans, steered by a driver who works the paddle wheel from the stern, and they were introduced in the 1870s as a gentle novelty for families strolling the park. Picturing them in 1889 captures a moment when the Public Garden, laid out as the city's first public botanic garden in the 1830s, had become a fashionable place for Bostonians to spend a summer afternoon.
