The Swan Boats have been a fixture of the Boston Public Garden since 1877, when Robert Paget first began rowing passengers around the small lagoon in pedal-driven boats shaped like swans. This view shows the lagoon and its passengers, with the park's willows and footbridge around them. The boats still carry visitors each spring through autumn, so the scene would be familiar to generations of Bostonians and children. Notice how little the setting has changed in its essentials: the lagoon, the paths and the leisurely pace of the ride remain much as they appear here.
