The scene shows the water celebration on Boston Common on October 25, 1848, when water from Lake Cochituate, west of the city, arrived through the new aqueduct and was sent up in a fountain on the Common. The event marked the start of a piped municipal supply that gradually replaced reliance on wells, cisterns and street pumps, and it drew large crowds to watch the water rise into the air. Views like this one show how the city presented its waterworks as a civic achievement, with the Common serving as a stage for public pride in engineering.
