This poster announces an exhibition of watercolors and prints held at the Federal Art Gallery in Boston, one of the public venues run under the Federal Art Project, the arts branch of the Works Progress Administration. The WPA put unemployed artists to work during the Great Depression, and its posters advertised exhibitions, concerts, and classes across the country. Many were made with screen printing, a method that was inexpensive and allowed bold flat shapes and lettering, so the posters were built to catch the eye of passersby on busy streets. Looking at this one, notice how the design balances the exhibition text against the imagery, a reminder that these works were both public art and practical advertising.
