The Old State House stands at the head of State Street, the place where the Massachusetts colonial government once met and where the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to Bostonians from its balcony in July 1776. This view from the southeast shows the building as it sits among the modern downtown towers, its brick walls and tall gabled roofline set against the streets that grew up around it. The building dates to 1713 and served as the seat of colonial and state government until the state moved to a new capitol on Beacon Hill in 1798. Its later survival owed much to preservation efforts, and it is now the oldest surviving public building in the city and part of Boston National Historic Park.
