Few pictures of Boston's early twentieth-century streets show the transition as plainly as this one does, with a horse-drawn carriage moving past the grounds associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT had moved from its original home in Boston's Back Bay to new quarters along the Charles River in Cambridge only shortly before, so the scene captures a city still organized around horses and foot traffic just as the automobile was beginning to appear. Look at the street surface, the spacing of the buildings, and the clothing of the passersby for a sense of how everyday travel worked in the 1900s.
