A church steeple rises above a tree-lined street where horse-drawn carriages still share the roadway, a reminder of how slowly Boston's streets changed in the early 1900s. Electric streetcars were already well established in the city, and automobiles were beginning to appear, but horses remained the main means of moving people and goods. Shaded avenues of elms and other trees were a point of civic pride, and they lined many residential and church neighborhoods. The scene shows a city in transition, with older street life and newer technology existing side by side.
