This portrait shows John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, who was a boy during the Revolution itself rather than one of its commanders. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1767, he traveled to Europe with his father, John Adams, during the diplomatic missions of the late 1770s, and he later graduated from Harvard in 1787. He went on to serve as secretary of state under James Monroe before becoming president in 1825, and his life traces the path from the Revolutionary generation to the next one.
