Few sports prints from the 1850s capture a regional team as clearly as this one does. It shows the Eleven of New England, a side drawn from the region's best cricketers, at a match in Boston in 1859. Cricket was then a sport of English origin that had taken root among Boston's clubs and immigrant communities, and organized matches between regional elevens drew crowds and drew attention to a game that many Americans still considered foreign. The picture is a useful record of how the sport was played and watched in the years before baseball became the country's dominant pastime.
