Few things look stranger than a baseball game played on the turf of Lord's, the London ground that has long been the home of English cricket. The 1874 exhibition tour by American clubs brought the sport across the Atlantic, and this engraving shows the novelty of the match: spectators in formal dress watching a game that most of them had never seen. The scene captures a moment when Americans were trying to introduce their national pastime abroad, with mixed results. Its appearance in a popular American periodical also shows how eager readers at home were to follow the story.
