The Boston National Bloomer Girls were a women's club whose name came from the loose bloomers players wore under short skirts, a style that set these teams apart on the field. Owner L.J. Galbreath's club belonged to the barnstorming tradition of the early twentieth century, when women's teams played exhibition games against local men's nines and rival women's squads in town after town. Touring on that scale depended on the railroad, since a team with its equipment and a crowded schedule of stops could only cover the distances by train, which explains the picture's place among the gallery's rail images.
