Charles Sylvester "Chick" Stahl, the Boston Beaneaters outfielder, appears here in a head-and-shoulders portrait, turned slightly to his left and wearing his baseball uniform. The picture was made around 1897 by the Boston photographer Elmer Chickering, whose studio produced many player portraits of the era. Images like this were often printed as cards for collectors, which helps explain their small, carefully posed format. Stahl played for Boston through the late 1890s and early 1900s, and the portrait offers a direct look at how the game's stars were presented to the public at the time.
