Unlike the many portraits on this board, this card shows John Thoney as a utility man for the Boston American League club, a versatile reserve who filled in wherever the manager needed him. It was issued as a Mecca cigarette card, part of the tobacco-company baseball cards that were packed with cigarettes in the early 1910s. Such cards were the main way fans saw players' faces and learned their positions before television or wide newspaper photography. Thoney's small, posed portrait reflects the simple studio style of the era, when a reserve player could be as collectible as any star.
