Shown in right profile and holding two lanterns, Revere is pictured with the detail that ties him to the night of April 18, 1775, when lanterns hung in the steeple of Old North Church signaled that British troops were moving by water. The print dates from about 1910, more than ninety years after Revere's death in 1818, so it reflects how Americans of that era wanted to remember him: as a patriot and courier of the Revolution. Revere was also a skilled silversmith and engraver, but his lasting fame rests largely on that midnight ride. The lanterns, rather than the face, carry the story.
