Paul Revere's midnight ride on April 18, 1775, is the event this picture commemorates, and the Old North Church in Boston's North End anchors the story. Revere, a silversmith and courier for the Massachusetts Committee of Safety, rode out to warn Lexington and Concord that British troops were marching from Boston. The c1910 date places the image in the years when American interest in Revere surged, shaped by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1863 poem "Paul Revere's Ride," which had cemented the legend in popular memory. Look at the scene as a period interpretation rather than a documentary record, since the ride's details were embellished over time.
