The Boston Public Gardens, the city's first public botanic garden, opened in 1837 on reclaimed marshland at the edge of the Common. By 1929 it had become known for its swan boats on the lagoon, its formal flowerbeds, and its bronze statues, including the nearby Make Way for Ducklings group added in 1987 being still decades away. A scene from that year would show a park already well settled into its role as a place for strolling families and office workers on lunch breaks, a character that the garden still largely keeps today.
