Dated 1910 on the bridge itself, this view of the East Cambridge Bridge spans the Charles River and linked Boston with the Cambridge shore. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, part of its early twentieth-century effort to document towns, streets and waterfronts across the country. Views like this one capture the everyday traffic of a crossing at a time when streetcars, wagons and early automobiles were sharing city streets. Its details of roadway, buildings and dress offer a useful look at how the crossing worked before the car came to dominate urban travel.
