The clipper *Surprise* was built at East Boston in 1850 by Samuel Hall, one of the most respected shipbuilders of the period. This photographic print, made around 1924, reproduces a painting of the ship rather than a photograph taken at the time of her launch. East Boston yards turned out many of the fast, narrow-hulled clippers of the 1850s, built for the China tea and California gold rush trades, when speed under sail was a matter of commercial pride. The 1920s reproduction shows how interest in these ships revived as Americans looked back on the age of sail.
