Bates Hall, the long central reading room of the Boston Public Library, is the subject here, shown as a stereo card that would have been viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. The main building in Copley Square, designed by McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1895, was among the most admired public libraries of its day, and its barrel-vaulted reading room with rows of tables and green-shaded lamps made it a favorite subject for photographers. Philadelphia photographer C.H. Graves issued this view around 1901 through the Universal Photo Art Co., one of many such cards sold to the public as a window onto distant places.
