Faneuil Hall, the brick market and meeting house on Dock Square in Boston, is the subject here, rendered as an engraving by A.L. Dick after a drawing by W.H. Bartlett. Bartlett, an English artist, made many views of American cities and landmarks for steel-engraved books in the 1830s and 1840s, and prints like this one were how many readers abroad first pictured places such as Boston. Faneuil Hall was built in 1742 as a gift from merchant Peter Faneuil and became known as the "Cradle of Liberty" for the colonial-era town meetings held there. The record gives no date for this print, so it is best read as a period view of the building.
