Faneuil Hall, the market house and meeting hall on Dock Square in Boston, is the subject of this 1789 etching, which served as the frontispiece to the March issue of The Massachusetts Magazine. Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews published the monthly from Boston, and the engraving shows the building as it stood in the years after the Revolution, when town meetings there had long been a center of colonial protest. Drawn by W. Pierpont and engraved by S. Hill, it is one of the earlier printed views of the hall, and it gives a sense of how the city presented its best-known civic landmark to readers in the new republic.
