Daniel Chodowiecki, a leading Berlin printmaker born in Danzig, etched this view of the Boston Tea Party for a German audience around 1784, about a decade after the event. The caption dates the dumping to 18 December 1773, though colonists emptied the tea chests into the harbor on the night of December 16. They were protesting the Tea Act, which kept a tax on imported tea. Chodowiecki presents the episode as popular defiance, an interpretation that shaped how many European readers understood the colonial dispute with London.
