Drawn from an elevated vantage point, this chromolithograph gives a sweeping, colored view of Boston around 1873, roughly a year after the Great Boston Fire of November 1872 destroyed much of the downtown business district. Currier & Ives, the New York firm best known for its popular prints, published the sheet, and the drawing is credited to Parsons & Atwater. Bird's-eye views like this were prized by civic boosters and residents who wanted to see their city laid out in a single image, with its streets, wharves and church spires readable at a glance.
