Drawn on the spot by Thomas Pownall, who governed Massachusetts Bay from 1757 to 1760, this bird's-eye view presents Boston from an elevated vantage, with the Charles River running through the scene. Pir Pugh painted the original, and Pierre-Charles Canot engraved the plate for London publication. It appeared in *Scenographia Americana*, a 1768 collection of American views issued by John Bowles. The print appeared the same year British troops arrived in Boston to enforce customs laws, so it captures a town that would soon become the center of the imperial crisis.
