Its French title, "L'entrée au port de Boston - dans l'Amérique," presents the harbor as a gateway into America. The etching reproduces a painting credited to Claude-Joseph Vernet, the French marine painter known for his port scenes, and it shows the forts and fortifications guarding the approach to the town. The record dates it to the 1770s, when Boston was occupied by British troops and its harbor was a strategic prize during the Revolutionary War. Prints like this often reflect a European view of colonial America as much as its actual geography.
