Drawn on the spot by Governor Thomas Pownal, a former royal governor of Massachusetts, this bird's-eye view looks down on Boston with the Charles River running past the town. Mr. Pugh painted the scene, and P.C. Canot engraved it for the 1768 London volume *Scenographia Americana*, published by John Bowles. The plate appeared the same year British troops arrived in Boston to enforce unpopular customs laws, an early step in the crisis that led to the Revolution.
