Seen from the heights of Dorchester, this aquatint takes in the harbor and the town of Boston in one wide sweep, a vantage point tied to the Revolutionary War. In March 1776, American forces under George Washington fortified the hills south of the city, and their artillery placed there forced the British to abandon Boston that same month. Robert Havell's view, issued in New York around 1841, looks back on that moment from a later era, when the city's waterfront had grown dense with shipping and buildings. Its hand-applied color and bird's-eye perspective make it a useful record of the harbor as it appeared in the early 1840s.
