This aquatint looks across the water from City Point, the Boston waterfront village near Sea Street, and its record names windmills, boats and harbor scenes as its main subjects. W.J. Bennett painted the original view and also engraved the plate, a double role that was common for British-trained topographical artists working in America in the 1830s. Henry I. Megarey published it in New York in about 1833, and the colored impression shows the harbor's working life: sailing craft moving between wharves while the windmills stand on the rising ground behind the shore. Early views like this one are valued for documenting Boston's shoreline before later landfill and building changed the peninsula's edges.
