Seen from the west end of the Navy Yard, this view looks across the water toward Boston, with the ship house and shipping in the foreground. The Navy Yard in question is the one at Charlestown, across the Charles River from the city, where the federal government built and repaired warships. Painted and engraved by W.J. Bennett and published in New York by H.I. Megarey around 1833, the aquatint was colored by hand, so each impression varies slightly. Its mix of working harbor and city skyline shows how Boston looked to visitors and naval men in the early 1830s.
