A carved figurehead from the cruiser U.S.S. Olympia is the subject here, shown at the Boston Navy Yard rather than on deck. The Olympia was launched in San Francisco and commissioned in 1895, and she became famous as Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898, the opening naval engagement of the Spanish-American War. The glass negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York wire photo agency, and the record's title comes from caption data the agency supplied that has not been verified, so the location and date are worth confirming. Ship ornaments like this were sometimes preserved ashore as relics of a vessel's service.
