From the ship house at the west end of the navy yard, this aquatint looks across the water toward Boston, with boats and shipping filling the harbor in the foreground. The navy yard in question stood on the Charlestown side of the Charles River, a working shipyard where vessels were built and repaired in the early republic. W.J. Bennett both painted and engraved the scene, which H.I. Megarey published in New York in 1833, with the color impression printed by J. Neale. The watercolor added by hand to the aquatint gives the harbor its tones and makes the view a useful record of Boston's waterfront in the 1830s.
