This etching shows the open square in front of the Town House, the building that had served as the seat of government in Boston, with its streets and figures filling the foreground. Francois Xavier Habermann engraved the plate for an Augsburg publisher, and the bracketed date of about 1778 places it during the Revolutionary War, when European readers followed the conflict through prints like this one. Because the view was made far from Boston, it likely relied on secondhand sketches or earlier engravings, so the hand coloring and details show how the city was imagined abroad as much as how it looked.

Medium1 print : etching, hand-colored.
