The record names the Rathaus, or town hall, as the focal point of this view: the German title "Prospect des plazes vor dem rath house zu Boston" points to the square in front of the Town House on King Street, the building that served as the seat of colonial government in Boston. The print is an Augsburg etching, likely made around 1778, a date when the city was in the middle of the American Revolution and far from the scene it depicts. Its bilingual French and German captions suggest it was made for a European market hungry for images of the rebellious colonies. Look closely at the crowded street life, which reflects how the city's commerce and public ceremony were carried out in the years before the war.
