This view shows Boston's harbor and waterfront, with the shipping and quays that made the town one of the busiest ports in British North America. The bilingual German and French title suggests it was printed for a broad European market, in Augsburg, a south German city that was a major center for engraved city views in the eighteenth century. The date is given only as 177-, placing it sometime in the 1770s, a decade when Boston was at the center of the growing dispute between colonists and Britain. Hand coloring was common on prints like this, and it adds to their appeal as a record of how distant readers pictured the town.
