Ships crowd the waterfront in this French-titled etching, which shows Boston from its harbor side rather than from the town's usual vantage. The engraver, François Xavier Habermann, worked in Germany, so the plate was likely built from a drawing or secondhand source rather than a sketch made on the spot. Catalogers date it to the 1770s, when the harbor was central to the city's trade and, soon after, to its political unrest. The hand coloring added to the engraved lines was a common finishing touch on such prints and gives the sky and sails their period tones.
