The Seamen's Bethel was built in 1833 by the Boston Port Society as a place of worship for people who made their living on the water, and it stood near the city's busy waterfront. This engraving appeared in Gilbert Haven and Thomas Russell's 1872 book on Father Taylor, the sailor preacher who spoke from its pulpit for decades. Herman Melville drew on Taylor's reputation when he wrote the sermon scene in *Moby-Dick*, which helps explain why the building has long been linked with American maritime literature.
