This engraving shows a tall obelisk raised beneath the Liberty Tree, the large elm where Boston's Sons of Liberty gathered to protest British policy. The monument was put up in 1766 to mark the repeal of the Stamp Act, the unpopular tax on printed paper that had angered colonists across America. Paul Revere, later famous for his role in the events of 1775, engraved the scene, so the print is both a record of a local celebration and an early example of his work. The tree itself was cut down by British troops during the occupation of Boston in 1775.
