Few early American prints show a public celebration as closely as this one, which records an obelisk raised beneath Boston's Liberty Tree to mark the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766. The tree, a large elm where colonial protesters had gathered since the 1765 crisis, was a common meeting place for Boston's artisans and merchants, and the repeal festivities turned it into a stage for political display. Revere's engraving gives a rare visual record of how colonists marked a political victory. The Library's impression is a later restrike, printed in 1839 or afterward, so it reflects the plate's design rather than the original 1766 printing.
