Printed in Boston on May 16, 1766, this broadside announces the repeal of the Stamp Act, the 1765 British tax that required colonists to pay for stamped paper on legal documents, newspapers, and pamphlets. Parliament had voted repeal in March, and the news reached Boston only weeks later, when the town greeted it with bells, bonfires, and celebrations. Printed notices like this one carried the news to readers across the city and show how quickly colonial printers spread political developments. The sheet is a useful record of the moment when colonial protest against imperial taxation briefly seemed to have won.
