A young newsboy appears to be turning the hand crank to start an automobile, a small street-level task that says a good deal about Boston at the time. Newsboys were a familiar sight on city sidewalks in the early twentieth century, selling papers to passersby and running errands for drivers and shopkeepers. Early motorcars had no electric starters, so getting an engine going meant a firm turn of a crank at the front of the car, which could kick back and injure an unwary operator. The scene sits between the horse-drawn city of earlier decades and the growing presence of the automobile on Boston's streets.
