Rather than a street scene or a portrait, this frontispiece shows the mansion itself, the seat of John Hancock, the merchant and politician who was serving as governor of Massachusetts when the plate appeared. The house stood on Beacon Street overlooking the Boston Common, an address Hancock inherited from his uncle Thomas Hancock. Hill drew and engraved the etching for the July 1789 issue of the *Massachusetts Magazine*, a monthly published in Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews. The house was demolished in the nineteenth century, so the print is valuable as a record of a building that no longer stands.
