This southeast view looks over the harbor toward Boston's crowded waterfront, where wharves and shipping meet the town's buildings. The engraving is by I. Carwitham, an English engraver, and was issued in London by the map and print seller Carington Bowles from his shop in St. Paul's Churchyard. Prints like this gave English buyers a picture of distant colonial ports, and Boston was then among the busiest trading towns in British America, so its wharves were central to the town's economy. The record dates the print only roughly, to between 1730 and 1760, but its subject places it in the decades before the Revolution.
