The etching's most distinctive feature is its bird's-eye vantage, with the Charles River running through the scene and the town spread out below. It appeared as the frontispiece of the December 1787 issue of *The Columbian Magazine*, a Philadelphia monthly, and is generally attributed to the engraver James Trenchard. Boston had been occupied by British troops from 1775 until their evacuation in March 1776, and by 1787 the port was rebuilding its trade. The title's claim that Boston was the capital of New England reflects its standing as the region's commercial and political center. Views like this were popular because they let readers far from the coast grasp a city's layout at a glance.
