Seen from the southeast, this view takes in Boston's crowded waterfront, where wharves and warehouses ran out into the harbor and anchored ships show how much of the town's life depended on the sea. The engraving was made by I. Carwitham and issued by Carington Bowles, a London map and print seller, so it was likely aimed at English buyers curious about a distant colonial port. The library's subject headings link it to the Revolutionary War, but the picture dates from the decades before that conflict, when Boston was already one of the busiest ports in British America.
