Long Wharf, which stretched from the foot of State Street into Boston Harbor, was one of the busiest working waterfronts in colonial America, and this view shows it as a crowded line of ships and warehouses. The wharf was built in the early eighteenth century and handled everything from fish and lumber to imported goods, so its forest of masts and rigging reflected the city's trade with ports across the Atlantic. This is a late-nineteenth-century reproduction of an earlier engraving, so the scene reflects how the harbor looked to the people who drew it, not a photograph taken on the spot. Its details of ship types and waterfront buildings are worth comparing with the historical record.
