This view shows the maternity building of the New England Hospital for Women and Children on Dimock Street in Boston. The hospital was founded in 1862 by Dr. Marie Zakrzewska and was largely staffed by women physicians, which was unusual at the time. Many women still gave birth at home then, so a dedicated maternity building at a women-led hospital marked a notable step in caring for mothers and infants in the city. The picture is a glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landscapes in the years around 1900.
