Tremont Street runs along the edge of Boston Common, and this glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company captures that boundary between a busy commercial thoroughfare and the city's oldest public park. The Common, laid out in the 1630s, was grazing land and a militia training ground long before it became a place for strolling, and by the 1910s the streets around it carried streetcars, shoppers, and the early subway work that ran beneath the park. The company's photographers traveled widely in these years, documenting American cities for promotional sales, and their large-format plates preserve street scenes like this one in fine detail.
